The Difference Between Good Catering and Great Catering

Good food is a pretty important starting point for any wedding catering company.

But after catering hundreds of weddings, we’ve learnt that great catering is about a lot more than what ends up on the plate.

The food needs to be delicious, of course, but there’s an entire experience happening around it. The timing, the service, the atmosphere, the way dietary requirements are handled and how the catering team works behind the scenes all play a part.

So, what actually makes the difference?

Great catering considers the whole experience

A canapé is being enjoyed while guests are catching up after the ceremony. A banquet is being shared while people are chatting around the table. Dessert might arrive just as the atmosphere is starting to shift towards the dance floor.

The food needs to work with what's happening around it.

That's something we think about when we're planning every wedding.

How will the service flow? When will guests be ready to eat? How can we keep things relaxed? What will work best with the venue and the couple's plans?

It's about making sure the catering feels like a natural part of the day.

Timing matters more than people realise

There’s nothing quite like sitting down at a wedding absolutely starving and then waiting for dinner to arrive.

Or having one course arrive before the table is ready for it.

Good catering gets the food out.

Great catering gets the food out at the right time.

On the day, our head chef coordinates the kitchen and service team to make sure everything comes together when it needs to.

That means food is being prepared, plated and sent out at the right time, while our front of house team makes sure guests are looked after throughout service.

When everything runs smoothly, guests don't think about the timing at all.

And that's exactly how it should be.

Dietary requirements shouldn't feel like an afterthought

This is something we feel particularly strongly about.

If someone has a dietary requirement, we don't think their meal should simply be the original dish with a few ingredients removed.

They should receive something that's been properly thought through.

We work with couples to understand their guests' dietary requirements and preferences and make sure suitable alternatives are prepared.

Because nobody wants to sit down at a wedding and feel like they've been given the boring version of everyone else's dinner.

Everyone should be excited about what's on their plate.

The service should feel effortless

There's a real skill in good front of house service.

Guests shouldn't feel like they're being rushed through a meal, but they also shouldn't be sitting around wondering what's happening next.

Our team is there to make sure guests are looked after without becoming the focus of the day.

With roaming canapés, that might mean moving through the crowd and making sure everyone gets to enjoy them.

During dinner, it means keeping an eye on the room, clearing plates when appropriate and making sure each course arrives smoothly.

The best service often isn't the service you notice.

It's the service that simply makes everything feel easy.

Great catering understands that every wedding is different

We've catered weddings in all sorts of venues, with completely different menus, guest numbers and ideas about what they want their day to feel like.

That's why we don't believe in simply taking the same formula and putting it into every wedding.

A banquet at one venue might be completely different from a plated dinner at another.

A cocktail-style wedding might need a different approach to a long lunch with family.

Great catering means understanding what the couple actually wants and working with them to make it happen.

It's about the little things

Sometimes the difference between good and great catering isn't something you can immediately put your finger on.

It's a dietary alternative arriving at the same time as everyone else's meal.

It's a banquet table with generous portions so people can help themselves.

It's a front of house team who are friendly, attentive and genuinely enjoy being there.

It's the couple being able to sit down for dinner and not have to think about what's happening behind the scenes.

Those little things add up.

Ultimately, it's about how the day feels

We're incredibly proud of the food we serve, but we don't want the food to be the only thing you remember about the catering.

We want your guests to feel well looked after.

We want them to enjoy sitting around the table together, sharing food and having a great time.

We want dietary requirements to be handled properly, service to feel seamless and the whole experience to fit naturally into your wedding.

Because good catering feeds your guests.

Great catering helps make the day.
